The spirit of the 12s runs rampant even through your Ballard Farmers Market today, as we await the Big Game this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. For those few reading this that are rolling your eyes about it all, I can only assure you it’ll all be over soon. But hey, Seattleites have something to cheer about — something bringing almost everyone together. Why not enjoy the ride? It happens so rarely around here, and let’s face it. It’s February, and most of us could use a little lift about now, am I right? Let’s start off with this image of The 12th Sheep from Glendale Shepherd. They making award-winning sheep cheeses, and they have a sense of humor and team spirit! Oh, and that sheep cheese makes for a great game time snack!

Speaking of game time snacks, you’ll find them all over your Ballard Farmers Market today, so get down here early, stock up, and then settle in for one very exciting evening! For instance, you could load up on this red beans & rice, or maybe some nice collard greensjambalaya or sweet potato pie from Simply Soulful. In fact, if you contact them through their website before noon Saturday, you can custom order larger sizes of anything they make, then pick it up Sunday morning to enjoy during the game!

This just in from our buddy, Lauren (not her, above), of Hama Hama Oyster Company:

We’ll be bringing some special “Boomstick” oysters – “12 for $12” – these are oysters grown in bags laying on the beach from Pickering Passage, which is in south Puget Sound, just north of Totten and Hammersley Inlets – well known places for growing nice, firm, flavorful oysters. These Boomsticks will be a little buttery-er than Hama Hamas and great for slurping raw, baked and/or grilled. We’ll also have some big Hama Hamas (mediums) for grilling, and the ever-delicious Blue Pools and Seacows. Everything else will also be available: lots of shucked Hama Hamas, smoked and pickled oysters, and of course yummy manila and mahogany clams, and Grandma’s delicious crab cakes.

Talk about game snacks! But I recommend getting here early.

And hey, if the party’s at your house, you have plenty of time to swing by the Market, pick up one of these delicious fresh, organic chickens from Stokesberry Sustainable Farm, prep it, and pop it in the oven to be ready by the time the Big Game starts. Or season it, take it with you to your friend’s party, and pop it in their oven, and it’ll be ready for Halftime!

For some seriously simple deliciousness, grab a package or three of fresh artisan pasta from Pasteria Lucchese. Then grab some of their real-deal pasta sauces, and in no time, you’ve got good eats for the whole gang! And adding a few of their awesome desserts wouldn’t hurt, either.

You gotta love this, even if you are a fuddy-duddy who finds all the Super Bowl hype annoying. This is The 12th Brownie from nuflours gluten-free bakery. Yeah, you heard me: gluten-free! Just because you have dietary restrictions does not mean you can’t have delicious fun during the Game today. This is their peppermint brownie, all dressed up. And truth is, you’ll like it even if you don’t need to avoid gluten. Trust me on this!

There is a part of me that likes to think baba ghanoush is some kind of religious guru, but the truth is that it’s an eggplant dig from the Holy Land. But, oh, how spectabulous a delicacy this is, adored by folks from Greece to Egypt and beyond. Lucky for us, our friends at Uncle Eyal’s throw down some mighty tasty baba ghanoush, to say nothing of their off-the-hook mint sauce, three varieties of hummus, and more! The Big Game may be being played in the Mid-Altantic states, but you can enjoy a nice taste of the Middle East while you watch it here in the Specific North Wet!

Guess who’s back? No, really. Guess. (Yeah, I hate when people do that, too.) Our old pal, Jimmy from Phocas Farms has returned from Port Angeles and Holland, and he has his gorgeous succulents ready for you to plant after the Game, or during it, if you are one of the now only 6.23% who don’t care. He also has a few bindles of the 2013 harvest of his prized Clallam County saffron, something he hasn’t been able to offer here for a couple of years, as it’s been sold out to local chefs. Get it while you can!

The game party food is getting real up in here! Yes, show up with an entire side of smoked wild Washington king salmon from Wilson Fish, and you will be the hit of the party… well, that, and the commercials.

For a mixer, or just to enjoy on its own (though you will want to add some water), some fresh, organic cranberry juice from Starvation Alley Farms on Long Beach Peninsula sounds pretty good, don’t your think?

Okay, I had to sneak some veggies in here. After all, you’ll need to eat something after the Big Game, though it might not be until two days after it! But these baby red Russian kale leaves from Stoney Plains Organic Farm will also be easy to cook up fast for your game day festivities. Just do a quick sauté with some garlic, and you’re good to go in maybe five minutes!

Of course, maybe you prefer your veggies pickled. For that, Purdy Pickles has you covered. From carrots to garlic to cukes to beets, and more, Purdy pickles it, using local veggies and lots of flavor. Grab a few jars and you’ll be welcome at even a Broncos party.

Whether you are searing a tuna loin or making sushi with it, cracking open a few cans and making a salad, or simply breaking out the smoked or jerkied tuna, you can’t go wrong! And remember, this is their monthly visit to your Ballard Farmers Market, so stock up so you’ll have it through the first Sunday of March!

I’m listening to the classic Andy Williams Christmas Album as I write this holiday installment of your Ballard Farmers Market blog, getting myself in the spirit to get you in the spirit. Just think of all those hep bright, primary color sweaters and matching slacks Andy and his family used to wear during their annual TV specials, and how could you not get bitten by a festive mood? There’s just something about Andy singing, “hoopdeedoo, and dickery dock, and don’t forget to hang up your sock…” that makes it impossible not to smile, unless you have a Grinch-sized heart. And what person wouldn’t be happy at the sight of an entire side of smoked white king salmon from Wilson Fish, either? I’ve sure love to find one of these beauties under the tree with my name on it, or on the party buffet table. Well, Santa and your helpers, the good news is, Wilson’s elves (yes, David is an elf!) have prepared many of these for you… if you’ve been good, that is.

Candles of every color and scent to set every mood, and even a few with no scent at all, so as not to interrupt the flavor of your food. Uncle Eyal’s joins us today with their amazing hummus, mint sauce, tahini and more. This is the food that brings Christians, Jews and Muslims together in peace around the dinner table, and as such, it is perfect for this season in which so much homage is paid to peace on earth.

I do hope One Leaf Farm has a last few of these aptly named Winter Luxury pumpkins today at your Ballard Farmers Market. They are the ultimate eating pumpkin, and they are really cool looking, too! And this is the last week for One Leaf until next spring, so avail yourself while you can!

I swear, you add a little holiday music, and suddenly the festive nature of Pink Lady apples from Tiny’s Organic Produce just kinda smacks you upside the head. They’re red and green, and they make for so many yummy treats, or just a good, crunchy snack. My father made an amazing pie with them at Thanksgiving, and he proudly said, “and I didn’t even have to use any sugar!” Boom.

It’s wearable art meets farmers market produce meets a beautiful gift that your someone special will love and never take off. Yup, these are veggie pendants from MetalWing Studios, made right here in Ballard! They, too, were on a brief hiatus for a holiday gift show, but they are back today with all manner of Northwest-inspired metal arts, from ornaments to pins to earrings and more! And with the recent deep freeze, that golden chard on the right might be all the chard you’ll see today at your Ballard Farmers Market!

How’s about some absinthe & black salt caramels from Jonboy Caramels to sweeten up the season? The Fay Farm on Whidbey Island raises Nubian goats. They milk those goats and make these lovely soaps with that milk. They also grow a lot of the herbs used to scent the soaps. They offer them in bar and liquid forms, and they are very gentle on one’s skin. And needless to say, though I will anyway, they make great stocking stuffers. And let’s face it, soap is a gift you give to everyone in your household, and to yourself, when your household bathes.

Every good holiday feast requires a roast holiday beast, be it a ham or a Tofurky. Or perhaps a chicken, like these lovely beasts from Skagit River Ranch. ‘Twas the night before Christmas, and everyone was gorging themselves of this spectabulous Nut Crunch, and all things toffeefudge and brittle from Pete’s Perfect Toffee. Why? Because we can, and because this is the best stuff around. Look, it’s cold outside. We need extra energy. And it’s the holidays, right? Let us get our sweet on! And you know, Pete’s little packages of deliciousness fit perfectly into any stocking, though let’s be honest with each other here… you are sooo going to eat it all while wrapping presents, and it will never makes its way into anyone’s sock. Michael makes some seriously good cookies, and I can attest… you will, in fact, love these cookies. They come in four flavors: The Pinckney Original, Dark Chocolate Oatmeal, Bing Bling! and Classic Chocolate Chip. They are chewy and delicious, and they are made with local Shepherd’s Grain flour.
